I am attempting to use dB Runtime to test a web app that is on a Windows Virtual Private Server. Must I have Apache installed to activate the exe?
Currently I have runtime insatlled but it does not run a dbase program that works on my inhouse server??

Any suggestions?

Ted,

As I understand it (I'm no expert), that answer is yes. You need the
Apache web server OR some other web server (ex: Microsoft IIS). The web
server runs the program for you, expecting it to write output to the
"standard output". (The output is the HTML your CGI program creates.) It
picks up the standard output from the dBASE programs and redirects it to
the browser.

HI Ted

Is this at GoDaddy (or some other web host) ?

If so, can you give us a few more details please? Where,
what level (GoDaddy has 2 or 3 VPS package offerings, IIRC),
etc.

Several years back, I tried to set up dBASE web apps at
GoDaddy on a Virtual Private Server. Unfortunately, the
package that I got would not allow it to run. (They did give
me a full refund, which was very good of them.) Last night,
I spent a good couple of hours rooting around through old
emails and newsgroup posts, but I haven't yet found any of
the correspondence about it yet.

Thank you

Hi Ted
I am now looking at Network solutions with apache on a
Linux server VPS. They appear to want to help, We will see
They may want to help, but I don't think they can. dBASE
will run on Windows only. Emulation environments or Wine
(which is NOT an emulator) are not ready yet, as far as I
know.

Thanks

I have tried to get dBase to run under Wine.

It comes close but no cigar. The BDE runs but the dBase IDE craps the bed. I cannot remember what happened with the runtime. Maybe I just gave up on the IDE and never tried the runtime.

Pity ... a Linux dBase solution would be great and a lot less expensive than M$.

Well, it's been slowly improving over the years. I usually
try it out around the end-of-year holidays, but I was in a
funk last year and didn't do much of anything. Here are some
screenshots from my latest attempts:

http://www.adojji.org/gallery/dww

Somewhere around the same time (late 06, early 07), I did
even better with FreeBSD 6 but I didn't take any
screenshots. Next time, I will be trying with FreeBSD 7.

I am an eternal optimist - I keep hoping!

:-) Just like a bottle of red wine ... I use the same strategy ... try again every 6 months or so using Ubuntu.

It kept timing out for me.
Sometimes I forget to mention ...

For testing, development and personal stuff, I run web
servers here at my house. It's sometimes a dodgy server, so
I have called it adojji.org. It's adojji server. Or
something ...

Anyway, the main web server is actually rock solid - it's
FreeBSD and if there were no power failures or anything, it
would run for years at a time. The problem is the flaky adsl
connection. I live in a rural area and I am at just about
the limit of connectivity. Lately, it's been going down more
than normal (and not coming back up either).

But Dave, how do you run dBASE web applications? You would
need Windows for that, wouldn't you?

Yes! My main development machine is right here in the
kitchen. It's a tiny little 600 sq ft house, so I turn off
the PC at night so I can sleep. (That's not as true as it
used to be - I'm getting older and deafer, and PCs keep
getting quieter and quieter.<g>)

So you may or may not get to the server.
Even if you do connect, some applications may not be
available at all times.

Thanks
David

David,
I finally got to it after about 20 minutes.
Chelsea just out of Ottawa ... I used to travel between Boston (Hanscom airforce base) and Kanata weekly for about 3 years in the early 80's.
Gets bloody cold there in winter. I can remember landing one night in a blizzard (I could not see the runway) in a corporate jet. Very talented pilot with high quality avionics ... the second most scary landing I ever had.
regards, andrew
Andrew,

Trust me, there are colder places in Canada than Ottawa.

Geoff,

Yes ... Edmonton ... -25C with a wind chill of -30C. Never been so cold in my life and eventually realized I was freezing from the outside in while I was scraping my windscreen.

But ... I loved Canada despite the cold.

Andrew,

Yes, that's more like it! I was born and raised in Regina, Sask. Like
Edmonton, that's an average winter's day. Try a cold snap where it is -
30 to -40 C or a really windy day that has a wind chill of -60 C.

With weather like this, you have to be careful. It could freeze your
beer.

Dave,

I am using Dotster with IIS ass a test. Dotster does not wish to assist in setup as they view VPS as my server. The Pleck Panel is shaky as well. I have been able to display a test page with a dbase app but when the submit button is pushed it appears to look then ask for a login/PW which does not work.

I am not a dBase programmer but I do the outlining of business processes and solutions that our Programmers make happen. IDM Company.

I am now looking at Network solutions with apache on a Linux server VPS. They appear to want to help, We will see

Thanks,

Ted
